ZoLO Painted Wood Toy Set 55 Pieces by Higashi Glaser Design

ZoLO Painted Wood Toy Set

ZoLO Painted Wood Toy Set

ZoLO Painted Wood Toy Set

We purchased this extremely rare ZoLO toy set at the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1987. As designers, we recognized this as another example of 80s design as valid as the concepts and products being created by Ettore Sottssass and the group of Milanese artists referred to as Memphis. These were industrial designers who in essence re-invented what we considered Modern Design. The movement marked the end of the 20th century. Revered mid-century modern designer, George Nelson said in 1983, “Memphis is not in any atlas. It is a state of the soul, the soul at the end of the 20th century. If you didn’t know that the 20th century has a soul now you know.” True, Byron Glaser and Sandra Higashi, the creators of ZoLO were not among Sottssass, Matteo Thun, Peter Shire, George Sowden, Michele De Lucchi, Nathalie du Pasquier, Marco Zannini, … but their colorful, eccentric, pop, cutting edge toy emerged from the influences of that new international design called Memphis.

This original ZoLO was handcrafted in 1986, hand carved and hand painted, each box was a work of art but also contained the resources for imaginative works of art. The exterior sleeve states: “Lurking within this box are 50 twisty, twirly, squiggly, wiggly, knobby, blobby, and polka-dotty handmade wooden pieces waiting to be put together. Just release your imagination, and ZoLO will go wild.” “ZoLO can be anything you want it to be. Just open your mind, feel from your heart and discover the world of ZoLO.” We also have the original tri-fold postcard to be sent back to the Old Chelsea Station, NY postal address. It was included to gather a data base “as part of their continuing effort to develop products that inspire the hearts and minds” from the recipients including their contact information, “livelihood, amusements, favorite playthings, three wishes, comments & doodles.” It was obvious the creators were impassioned and having fun!

This, ZoLo “Designed by Raw Materials” is in excellent vintage condition. It is proto-typical.The original printed die cut cardboard sleeve still slips over the plywood box. The original makers attempted to clean up their still rough cut boxes with wood putty to mask the nails that hold the box together, note, this is original, not a repair. We count 55 pieces, including the fiber material drawstring bag which stores the smaller pieces. It was “played with” less than a hand full of times by us. The latex rubber on one piece has dried out over time, naturally and one curved connector was carefully repaired. This sculptural plaything is extraordinary, rare indeed, especially in its condition and completeness!

Red Cross Kidney Plaster Kit Advertising Sales & Display Box

This finger jointed display box for Johnson & Johnson Red Cross Kidney Plasters is an interesting piece of medical history. The company was founded in New Brunswick, N.J. Boxes or drawers like this were made from materials used for cigar boxes purchased from the neighboring William Black Co. Johnson & Johnson’s medicated plasters were made from an rubber compound from India that was then infused with medications which were then rolled out into flat pieces. One side provided the adhesion and one side the topical medication. The plasters treated and blocked pain from a variety of ailments including kidney disorders, sciatica, and rheumatism and “do not induce drug habits.” Ingredients such as capsicum, found in peppers was is in one such plaster compound. Other plasters listed on the drawers include Belladonna, Belladonna Capsicum, and Cough. The drawer pulls are not only decorative, but functional.

The details in the lithographs are priceless and range from the familiar red cross and Johnson and Johnson logo to the slogan “Feels Good on the Back” and depiction of a couple enjoying a lazy day on the shoreline under a wide umbrella. The thin wood on the back panel has split, probably decades ago. The lithograph on this panel has “split” with it. The graphics are still legible, regardless. Other panels describe the specific benefits of the use of their plasters. The front drawers’ lithographs detail the specific types of plasters that would have been stored within. Someone made a pencil notation on one of the drawer fronts.

A great resource on the web for Johnson & Johnson history and its people is the Kilmer House.

Apollinaris Glazed Ceramic Advertising Match Striker

matchstriker-b-8102

apollinaris match striker

This beautiful glazed and crazed Apollinaris advertising match holder and striker is an inch larger in diameter than similar match strikers. Apollinaris is a German brand of mineral water which is still available for sale in Europe (and was on sale in the UK at the time the match striker was made) and the U.S. As beautiful as the cobalt blue is on this match striker, we don’t know why they bottled and marketed the mineral water in a green bottle until recently after Coca Cola purchased the company from Cadbury Schweppes.

This Apollinaris match striker was made by the firm of W. Wood & Co, as marked on the bottom. W.Wood & Co operated between 1873 and 1932, from the Albert Street Works in Burslem, Staffordshire. The mark on this striker dates the piece from between 1915 and 1932, a similar knot work mark but without the crown was used previously on pieces made between 1880 and 1915. In addition to the ornate crown, it contains the symbol of the County of Stafford, and was used by many of the potters from Stoke on Trent. The handsome three loop knot represents “the knot unites.”

This striker does not have ridges per se, it has a rough surface for strikes between the two bands. The ample sloped dish area allows for remnants of used matches to safely be placed after use.

We picked this rich piece of advertising, pub, and smoking memorabilia in the midwest at an estate auction.

Seven Vintage John Deere and Farm Supply Advertising Bullet Pencils

farm bullet pencils

It is easy to date these vintage advertising bullet pencils as being from the 1940s and the 1950s. Some don’t even include phone digits, let alone the ubiquitous web urls we are now provided for businesses. Most of this group’s include a several digit number, which assumes a local connection for the user. These pencils were unique to an era.

They each have a “bullet” tip which when pulled out reveals the pencil with its protected, sharpened lead. The second segment of the pencil consists of the printed, early plastic cover with the eraser on the other end. These bullet pencils may be seen in photographs of farmers in their denim overalls. Each overall bib had a sewn area for a writing utensil such as a bullet pencil. These and similar bullet pencils were not only a savvy means of advertising for local, regional, or national advertising of farm equipment, seed, and other similar services, but a functional, if not necessary writing instrument back in the day.

This is an instant collection on which to build for anyone interested in John Deere equipment, farming, writing instruments, or the history of advertising ephemera. Included are two John Deere (four legged deer). and one Pioneer Seed Corn bullet pencil. Two of the seven appear to have been lightly used or not used. Six are in very good vintage condition. We have included a seventh bullet pencil, this one from Stark Trucking. Although we could, no doubt, use a pliers to pull it open, we have not.

Three beehive or ringware nesting mixing bowls discovered among the contents of our Grandmother’s basement. In remarkable condition for how long they were initially used and then stored. Bauer pottery, an American pottery that was founded in Paducah, KY was moved to California in the early 1900s. Operations were closed in 1962 the result of a dispute related to labor. Here are three bowls, the largest of the three bowls is ( 9″ x 4.5″) a soft green marked BAUER USA on the bottom clean and in very good vintage condition. The medium ( 7.5″ x 4″) is a pretty periwinkle blue glaze with no crazing, or chips. There is one tiny glaze flaw on the inside; there since its original firing. It is marked BAUER USA, clearly under the original gloss glaze. The smallest of the three is an off white (7″ x 3.5″) unmarked. It has no chips, just light crazing in the glaze but nothing detracting.
